FISU - University Handball World Cup 2022 started today in Pristina. 14 university teams, from three continents, will compete this week for best team in the world in university handball at the premises "October 1" and "Palace of Youth and Sports" , with both women and men competitions.
During the Cup’s opening ceremony held in the "October 1" hall, the participating universities teams marched, including the University of Prishtina "Hasan Prishtina" - the host university.
The Executive Director of the Cup, Musa Selimi, emphasized that it is a great privilege for the World University Handball Cup to be held in Kosovo, after many months of preparations for this event. "As a new country, Kosovo has faced many challenges and yet has made impressive progress, especially in promoting itself through sports," said Selimi. He invited the teams to compete, but at the same time encouraged student-athletes not to forget to enjoy this unique event, inviting participants to celebrate, as with the motto of the Cup - "Hands UP and Celebrate"! Selimi thanked the FISU for their steadfast trust, the partners for their support, and the organizing committee and staff for their hard work in organizing this event.
Since 1949, the International University Sports Federation has brought together students from all over the world. On behalf of FISU, Executive Committee Member, Mr. Gabriel Kotchofa, delivered a speech at the ceremony as well. He congratulated the Kosovo University Sports Federation, the organizational team, volunteers, and all those who made this event possible. "We are very grateful for your hospitality. Therefore, I invite the FISU delegates and other participants to enjoy these wonderful moments and bring with them unforgettable memories from this experience in Pristina and in this beautiful country of Kosovo" said Kotchofa.
The official opening of the Cup was made by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Mr. Hajrulla Ceku. He welcomed all Cup participants to the state of Kosovo and expressed his happiness that he is declaring this major sports event open. "I have the pleasure and honor to officially declare the 2022 FISU World University Handball Cup open", Minister Çeku concluded in his speech.
The ceremony continued with the oaths of the athletes, the technical team and the judges. Meanwhile, the ending of the ceremony was dedicated to the cultural program, where the "Shota" Ensemble performed under the sounds of Albanian music.

The match which followed the official ceremony and concluded the competitions of the first day of the cup was between the University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu Mandaue from Spain and the University of Pristina.
